Chatting is one of the few well-paying remote professions with no formal entry barrier: no degree, no apprenticeship, no CV filter. That does not mean everyone can do it - it means nobody filters you out beforehand. The filtering happens in your first weeks, on a live account.
What you actually need to bring
- Feel for language. You do not need to write poetry - you need to write warmly, naturally and with few errors. If friends say texting with you feels good, that is a better signal than any grade.
- Empathy with resilience. You will write with lonely, sometimes difficult people - and must stay warm without wearing yourself down.
- Discipline. Shift times, handover notes, rules. Chatting is teamwork on a real account, not a hobby.

Your experience counts more than you think

The mistake almost every beginner makes
They apply cold - and learn the profession during the trial phase, at the cost of real customer relationships. That usually ends badly, because the classic beginner mistakes (selling too early, emoji storms, mishandling the meet-up question) cost revenue instantly. Agencies cut losses fast.

A realistic roadmap
- Week 1: learn the fundamentals, get certified, measure and train your typing speed.
- Weeks 1-2: apply to 3-5 legit agencies (screening checklist: are chatter jobs legit?).
- Weeks 2-4: trial shifts - keep notes, ask for feedback, follow the rules to the letter.
- From month 2: optimise commission, build regulars, develop routine.
Breaking in without experience does not mean breaking in unprepared. Your starting point does not matter - your craft does.
