Typing Speed for Chatters: The Most Underrated Training

Of all chatter skills, typing speed is the least glamorous - and the only one that can be measured exactly. Which is precisely why good agencies ask about it.

Why speed is money

The maths is simple: fans expect replies within minutes (the 3-minute rule), and a chatter handles many conversations at once. At 25 words per minute you manage half as many well-kept chats per shift as someone at 50 - and therefore half the sales opportunities. On commission models, speed converts directly into income.

Practical benchmarks:

(WPM = words per minute, counted as 5 characters per word.)

The four-week plan

Week 1 - measure and fix technique. Measure your baseline (the entry check of our certification course does this automatically and documents it on your certificate). Then: touch typing. Four-finger typing has a hard ceiling - switching costs two uncomfortable weeks and pays back every year after.

Week 2 - short daily sessions. Fifteen minutes a day beat two hours on Sunday. Free trainers are everywhere; what matters is practising without looking at the keyboard and putting accuracy before speed - corrections cost more time than slow typing ever does.

Week 3 - practise chat-realistically. Train with real chat sentences instead of random words: short lines, casual language, emojis via shortcuts. That is exactly how our typing test measures too - 60 seconds of chat-style text.

Week 4 - under load. Run two or three private conversations in parallel and reply promptly everywhere. That simulates the real shift situation: speed plus context switching.

Three technique tips that work immediately

  1. Templates? No - thought templates. Copy-pasted replies are forbidden in chatting (they destroy the illusion), but recurring structures (greeting → pick up a detail → question back) should live in your fingers until they are automatic.
  2. Tame autocorrect. Wrongly "corrected" names and slang cost more than they save. Maintain your dictionary.
  3. Respect the keyboard. A laptop on a couch is a handicap. Firm surface, comfortable angle - ergonomics is endurance.

Speed replaces no other skill - but it multiplies every skill you have. And it is the one chatter ability where four weeks of training guarantees measurable results.
